- My research question is: What difficulties did you face growing up, with language development, and how were you able to overcome them?
- I decided to interview my friend, Roxanne, who uses a hearing aid and I would like to know more about her experiences.
- Script:
- When did you start using a hearing aid?
- What has that been like?
- Could you tell me about some of the challenges you faced growing up?
- How were you able to overcome these challenges?
- How many languages do you speak?
- How did you learn these languages?
- Did you face any challenges during this time?
Hi Surabhi—
This is moving in a positive direction, especially for changing your topic later in the game. Here’s some thoughts for you to work in as you continue down this path:
**You’ll want to tweak your research question a bit to be more…researchable? The way you have things now is a question that everyone could answer in their own way in such a manner that they’d all be right. So try and shoot for something that moreso addresses the target population you’re thinking about: “How do D/deaf and/or hard-of-hearing people develop literacy / language skills in hearing-based environments?” Or something along those lines.
**I’d include a question that connects the hearing aid with language development. Maybe there are connections to be drawn there. Maybe not. But I think you’ll want to ask about the relationship between those things (if it exists at all).
**My last piece of advice is to try and avoid language of overcoming / challenges when it comes to disability or D/deafness. It’s possible that your participant / these groups of people might not see their experiences as challenges or as things that need to be overcame, so I’d try and talk around that a bit.
Once you make these revisions (no need to show me or anything), you’ll be good to conduct the interview. Let me know if you have any questions about any of this.
